Zacznijmy od tego samego pytania. Jak byś ocenił wolną agenturę w wykonaniu Saints? Kto jest największym wzmocnieniem, a kto największą stratą?
Powiedziałbym, iż Saints poczynili ogromny krok w celu polepszenia zespołu podczas offseason. Ponownie, tak jak w poprzednim sezonie, nie są to „najseksowniejsze” transfery; lecz są to dobre transfery, zapewniające dużą głębię składu, czyli coś, czego brakowało tutaj w ostatnich sezonach. W mojej opinii najlepszym z ruchów jest przedłużenie Nicka Fairleya, a za nim podpisanie Larry’ego Warforda na pozycji guarda. Odnośnie strat, powiedziałbym, iż odejście Tima Hightowera jest największą. Był on bardzo dobrym uzupełnieniem i zabezpieczeniem na wypadek kontuzji Marka Ingrama, ale zespół ma najwyraźniej inne plany, mogące obejmować draft. Oczywiście jednak Ingram zrobił bardzo wiele, aby zagwarantować sobie miano biegacza na wszystkie trzy próby.
W obliczu plotek odnośnie Johnny’ego Manziela, jak postrzegasz sytuację Saints na rozegraniu? Powinniśmy pozyskać młodego rozgrywającego, dać Graysonowi jeszcze jedną szansę, czy może poczekać?
Plotki o Manzielu były tylko tym – plotkami. To spory problem przy smakołykach takich jak ten wyciek i możecie zobaczyć jak bardzo media w całym kraju to łyknęły. Sean Payton bardzo szybko powiedział, iż to było tylko zapoznanie się z jego osobą i w wielu aspektach, to właśnie robi dobry trener. Od jakiego zawodnika/zawodników oczekujesz przełomowego roku w karierze?

Te zmiany były złem koniecznym. Seana Paytona czeka najważniejszy sezon podczas jego pracy w Nowym Orleanie i skończyły mu się wymówki odnośnie braku zespołu w playoffach. Podobają mi się te zmiany i fani byli podekscytowani, że w końcu do nich doszło. Nie można zapomnieć, co ci trenerzy (Johnson, Vitt, McMahon) zrobili dla zespołu przez te lata, ale czasem nadchodzi ten czas, iż należy dokonać zmian.
Mówiąc o Seanie Paytonie. Ofensywa pod jego przewodnictwem wyglądała bardzo źle przeciwko Detroit i Tampie. Kto powinien dyktować zagrania, Sean czy Pete Carmichael? Oraz, czy ofensywa powinna być bardziej wyważona i nie polegać aż tak na grze górą? Dwa z trzech najlepszych sezonów Saints w ostatniej dekadzie były nacechowane bardziej zbalansowanym podejściem do ofensywy.
Ofensywa zdecydowanie miała problemy przeciwko Detroit oraz Tampie i to był po prostu przykry widok, zwłaszcza, kiedy zespół miał jeszcze szanse na playoffy. Wierzę, iż Payton i Carmichael mają dobre zrozumienie odnośnie tego, czego oczekiwać , bo obaj są mądrymi ofensywnymi trenerami. Jednakże musi być moment, iż kiedy coś nie działa, to musisz spróbować ugryźć to z innej strony. Balans w ofensywie był całkiem niezły w zeszłym sezonie i fakt, iż Mark Ingram przełamał barierę tysiąca jardów jest zasługą Saints dających mu piłkę. Jakkolwiek do tego podejdą, najważniejsze jest to, aby panowali nad tempem gry i wygrywali szybko oraz często.

Let’s start with the same question. How would you grade Saints off-season thus far? Who’s the best addition? Who’s the biggest loss?
I’d say the Saints have made a tremendous stride in improving their team during the offseason. Again – similar to last season, the additions are not the sexiest. However, they are the right ones, and can provide a ton of depth, something that has been missing from the past several seasons. I would say the best addition has been re-signing Nick Fairley, followed by picking up Larry Warford at guard. As far as losses, I would say the Tim Hightower departure is the biggest loss. He was a huge compliment and insurance policy to Mark Ingram, but it would appear the Saints had other plans, which could include looking to the draft. Of course, Ingram has done plenty to warrant the title of being the team’s 3-down back.
In the wake of Johnny Manziel rumours, how do you view Saints QB situation? Should we go after young quarterback, give Grayson one more chance or wait for now?
The Johnny Manziel rumors were just that. That’s a huge issue when tidbits like this leak, and you could see how far the national media took it. Sean Payton was quick to say that it was just getting to know him, and in some aspects, that is what a good head coach does. As far as the current situation, it’s clear that Chase Daniel and Luke McCown will fight it out for a backup spot while Garrett Grayson could be completely expendable if the Saints go for two quarterbacks again. For the draft, I don’t think it’s the most pressing thing to go find a quarterback of the future to potentially replace Drew Brees, especially when he’s of the mindset that he can play well into his 40s. Given his physical stature and such, there’s little to suggest that he’s dropping off.
What is, in your opinion, the best pick for the Saints at #11?
At 11th overall, the Saints will either need to go get their defensive end (pass rusher) or a cornerback. If someone like Marshon Lattimore is hovering around there, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Saints go there and get a pass rusher later. My top pick for a pass rusher is Derek Barnett from Tennessee. In my opinion, he’s the most complete and realistic end in this draft that could fit the Saints model.
From which player(s) do you expect a breakout year?
There’s so many that could go into this category, and safety Vonn Bell would be a very likely choice. However, my big players I’m looking at would be running back Daniel Lasco and defensive tackle David Onyemata. For all intents and purposes, Onyemata was very raw coming into the NFL. He did a great job under then defensive line coach Bill Johnson, and could only get better with Ryan Nielsen in the mix. As for Lasco, without a returning Hightower, maybe he’s in for more carries. However, it’s entirely too early to project that.
Though defense rapidly improved at the end of last season, a few coaches were exchanged for a new ones. Do you consider staff changes made by Sean Payton good?
The coaching changes were a necessary evil. Sean Payton faces the most important season with the Saints, and he’s out of excuses to get this team back into the playoffs. I like the changes made, and fans were ecstatic that they were finally done. You can’t just ignore what those coaches (Johnson/Vitt/McMahon) did for the team in the past, but at some point you have to change the people.
Speaking of Sean Payton, offense under his calling was really bad versus Detroit and Tampa. Who should make the calls? Sean or Pete Carmichael. Also should the offense be more balanced and not rely so much on passing game? Two of three best Saints seasons in last decade came with a more balanced approach to offense.
The offense definitely struggled against Detroit and Tampa, and it was just downright painful to watch it, especially since the team was somewhat in the playoff mix. I believe Payton and Carmichael have a good understanding of what to expect, and both are very smart offensive-minded guys. That being said, there has to be a point where if something isn’t working, you need that input from the other. The balance on offense was pretty good last season, and the fact that Mark Ingram totaled over 1,000 yards rushing was a credit to the Saints feeding him. However they approach it, all that matters is that they can control the tempo of the game and win early and often.
